I know we are all conditioned to believe Beans Meanz ... that other H word. What great marketing that advert was!
But actually that simply translates into one of the healthiest foods we can eat being transformed into something that really does us no good nutritionally at all.
This is a bit like my chocolate analogy. Taking what is truly a really super food and adding sugar, additives and more, turns this into something we should NOT be consuming on anything like a regular basis.
But in actual fact, we should be trying to consume some sort of beans, or pulses at EVERY mealtime. Yes I said EVERY mealtime.
I’ve been playing around with how to get this in and while it sounds a hard ask, it’s really not that difficult.
From a child who was told I would turn into a baked bean if I ate any more ( I was actually afraid this may be true!!), I have had to develop a more beneficial way to eat my beans and migrate away from the Heinz to the Healthy.
And here is the good news. Making your own baked beans does not mean less flavour, less enjoyment or self denial of any sort. In fact, going healthier should never mean self denial. It’s actually about rewarding yourself. Giving your body what it, and you deserve.
I’ve ‘bean’ making these a lot lately and I just can’t get enough. What is more, both myself and the children like them more.
There is something between the cognitive connection of the goodness that foods do us and heightening the enjoyment and eating benefits.
Play around with this yourselves pleeeeaaase! Cooking isn’t about getting things right or wrong.
It’s about getting flavours and tastes right for you. Adding a bit more of you fancy.
🍅 1 can borlotti beans
🍅 1 can black beans
🍅 1 can kidney beans
🍅 1 carton passata
🍅 1 large finely grated cloves garlic
🍅 1 finely chopped red onion
🍅 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
🍅 Good shake Tabasco
🍅 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
🍅 Teaspoon tamari
🍅 Small squeeze coconut nectar
🍅 Black pepper to taste
🍅 Less than teaspoon avocado oil
Cooking time; 10 minutes
What I did;
🌶 In a pan I added the oil, garlic and onion. Cook gently for approx 4 mins until both are soft.
🌶 Add the carton of Passata and stir well.
🌶 Next add the rest of the condiments; Worcestershire sauce, tamari, vinegar etc.
🌶 Stir well and then add your beans.
🌶 Keep on a very low heat and taste to see if you want to add a bit of anything else. If you fancy it a little spicier then add some fresh chilli.
Serve when ready with absolutely ANYTHING you fancy.
This makes a pan full and keeps well in the fridge for a couple of days where the flavour only gets better.
Make a batch at the start of the week and plan Mondays and Wednesdays meals around the beans.
